FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Friends and Neighbors of Geneva,
It has been a busy month in sleepy little Geneva, Illinois.
The City Council recently voted to continue the now eight-year saga of the deteriorating Blacksmith Shop sitting on the riverbanks of our beautiful Fox River, rather than moving forward with a responsible development plan that would truly enhance the entrance to Geneva’s East Gateway.
They also voted to proceed with an overly expensive referendum for a new police station—one that may include additional “amenities,” though those have yet to be determined. Their preferred site for this large new complex is a heavily traveled residential street where baseball and soccer fields currently serve our families and children. If the building goes forward as proposed, those fields will be lost.
On top of this, the City is considering asking voters for Home Rule, which communities under 25,000 residents may only obtain through a referendum—giving local government significantly expanded authority.
And these aren’t the only concerns. We are also seeing proposals for new solar fields and troubling decisions involving Chamber of Commerce funds—raising alarms about whether there will be enough support to sustain signature traditions like the Swedish Days Parade and Festival, a jewel in Geneva’s history.
Now is the time for citizens to get involved—to protect the Geneva we love from being reshaped by officials who come and go, without long-term accountability to the people who live here.
Let’s elect new, common-sense leaders.
Let’s save Geneva.
Let’s save America.
Sue
